It is not an issue of escaping responsibility for the things that one has done. It all boils down to the idea of purity. A person can choose to live a moral and ethical life without God and can choose to be a moral humanist and do charitable things and be helpful to people and be kind to people and be good to people but still not be able to achieve a level of purity that would allow them to be in a state where they could commune with God. The most ethical and moral atheist or humanist is still in a state of spiritual impurity. In order for a human being to be pure, it requires divine intervention because humans, by their nature, are incapable of such a level of purity without help. God provided a means of achieving purity. The whole thing is about giving humans an opportunity to be pure in a way that they could never do on their own and without that purity they could never get close to God. People misunderstand this whole idea. A common example is; "so if Hitler did all the horrible things he did and then three seconds before his death he asked Jesus for forgiveness would he go to heaven? How is that fair when another person lives a moral atheist life and then goes to hell?" This is a wrong understanding of what is going on. People have the wrong idea of the whole subject. It isn't about getting yourself out of trouble. It isn't about buying some sort of insurance for the next life. It isn't about getting a reprieve from your horrible life that you have lived. It's not about buying your way into heaven. It's not about escaping hell. All of these thoughts are very immature and incorrect. It is about having such a deep love for God and wanting to be close to Him. And for those who have this kind of love for Him, He provides a means of achieving the kind of purity that is necessary to be with Him.
It's not about getting out of trouble, it's about being in love.
Being born of woman you were born into this world and are of this world and when you die you leave this world unprepared for the next world and you will die there as well. Being born a second time, of the spirit, you are being born into the next world while still in this world so that when you die in this world you are alive in the next world and you do not die in the next world. Those who are not born of the spirit, when they die in this world, will spend what feels like eternity in a place that is between this world and the next world and that is usually referred to as hell. They are there awaiting their death. The real death. In that place they are separated from God for what feels like eternity as they await the true death. Those that are born of the spirit while still in this world, when they die, they do not experience the inbetween world of hell and they do not go on to the second true death, but rather, when they leave this world, they go on to the next life. True life. That's why it is said; born once, die twice. Born twice, die once.
Matthew 15:24
I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
John 6:37
All that the Father gives Me will come to Me.
John 6:44, 65
No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him.
John 10:26-29
But you do not believe because you are not My sheep... My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.
John 8:43-47
Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word, you are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do...He who is of God hears God's words, therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.
Roman's Road
All humans are impure by nature. Even if a baby was born and left on an island all alone and never contacted another human being it would still grow up to be impure. It is unfortunately human nature. God is pure. In order to be in His presence, we must be purified, but, humanity has no ability to purify itself because we are by, nature, impure. So, God provided detailed instructions on purification but even with those instructions we still couldn't manage purity. So He finally provided a path that is not complicated but it still is not easy. It requires honesty with one's self and honesty with God, broken hearted repentance and supplication before God, surrender of one's will to God, acknowledgement that one is a hopeless sinner and helpless to purify himself or change his own heart, acceptance of God's sacrificial emanation in the form of His Messiah/Son/Jesus as atonement for our sins, invitation of His instructional emanation in the form of the Holy Spirit into one's heart and life, continued understanding that we are weak and hopelessly sinful and require constant vigilance in order to continue on the path of righteousness, continuous humility and supplication, profession of one's acceptance of God's Messiah/Son/Jesus, living a life consistent with repentance and one's commitment to righteousness.
The Romans Road lays out the plan of salvation
1. Who needs salvation.
2. Why we need salvation.
3. How God provides salvation.
4. How we receive salvation.
5. The results of salvation.
Everyone needs salvation because we have all sinned.
Romans 3:10-12, and 23
As the Scriptures say, “No one is righteous—not even one. No one is truly wise; no one is seeking God. All have turned away; all have become useless. No one does good, not a single one.” ... For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. (NLT)
The price (or consequence) of sin is death.
Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. (NLT)
Jesus Christ died for our sins. He paid the price for our death.
Romans 5:8
But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. (NLT)
We receive salvation and eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ.
Romans 10:9-10, and 13
If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved ... For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (NLT)
Salvation through Jesus Christ brings us into a relationship of peace with God.
Romans 5:1
Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. (NLT)
Romans 8:1
So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. (NLT)
Romans 8:38-39
And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. (NLT)
